Workers' group raises salaries for Galaxy Ent, calls for bonuses

  26.07.2023 в 10:59   31
A group of workers representing some employees of Macau-based casino operator Galaxy Entertainment Group said they were concerned about a lack of information on whether the company would propose a pay rise in 2017. The group claimed to represent about 1,000 workers employed by the casino company.

At Thursday's press conference, members of the workers' group said there was no "mark" from Galaxy Entertainment for next year's pay rise as of today. The group of workers also claimed it had not received any information about whether there would be an annual bonus of the type commonly granted by local employers around Spring Festival, according to local media reports that did not name the group.

The workers' group said salaries should be adjusted in consideration of rising prices and rising urban living costs. Representatives of the organization added that the pay increase should be at least in line with the 2.46 percent pay increase announced for civil servants.

Investment bank Credit Suisse AG said in a November memo that a modest pay rise announced by the Macau government for public workers is likely to reduce pressure on casino operators in the city to raise their annual wages in 2017.

In an emailed statement to GGRAcia on Friday, a Galaxy Entertainment spokesperson said the company "values" its employees' remuneration and benefits and added that the company is open to "close and direct communication" with employees.

"Galaxy Entertainment gave discretionary bonuses in early 2016 and announced on July 29, 2016 that it would give all qualified full-time team members below the senior manager's rating a 'special bonus award' and guaranteed tips (if any)," said Buddy Ramchiseng, senior vice president of public relations for Galaxy Entertainment. He added that all employees who joined Galaxy Entertainment after July 2, 2015 were "paid on a pro-rata basis."

"Galaxy Entertainment also announced a special reward program in 2014, which offers a senior manager rating of less than three times the annual salary of the company's of August 2014. The bonus will go into effect on December 31, 2017," Lam added.

The workers' group also called on casino operators on Thursday to introduce a policy that says employees have the right to take time off in the event of a conflict between Macau's government-designated mandatory holidays and employees' weekly holidays. Like Christmas this year, Macau does not offer mandatory weekday holidays as compensation if mandatory holidays fall on weekends.

Currently, only SJM Holdings Inc. of the six casino operators in Macau is giving frontline and back office employees a day of compensation, workers' group members told a news conference. The press conference was held at the Macau Civil Service Association, an organization led by local lawmaker Jose Pereira Coutinho.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Pereira Coutinho told reporters that the current holiday issue was "unfair" and needed to be addressed by casino operators in Macau. "We hope the six casino operators will come up with good news soon," he said.

Lam of Galaxy Entertainment said the company will analyze the situation before introducing new measures. "Galaxy Entertainment executives will study and consider time-off measures for holidays equivalent to non-working days," he added. www.slotmachinesite.com
